Genealogy & Local History
Heritage Hunters of Saratoga County will meet on Saturday, March 16 at 1 p.m. at the Town of Saratoga Town Hall, corner of Rt. 4 and Rt. 29 in Schuylerville. David Lowry, Manager of Local Government Advisory Services at the New York State Archives, will discuss some of the lesser known records that can be found in government resources in our area. Trip to Turning Stone Casino
The Olde Saratoga Seniors will be hosting a Trip to Turning Stone Casino on Monday, March 18.  Bus will leave Saratoga Train Station at 6:15 a.m. or American Legion in Schuylerville at 6:45 a.m. Will return approximately 8:30 p.m. Cost is $10 for members and $15 for non-members. Diseases of their Lives
The Ballston Area History Roundtable will present a program entitled "Diseases of their Lives" at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 21 at Brookside Museum, located at 6 Charlton St. in Ballston Spa. Anne Clothier, Education Director at the Museum, will discuss illnesses and treatment in Saratoga County and beyond in the period 1780-1920. Call for Artists with Chronic Illnesses, Disabilities, & Caretakers
Nonprofit seeks artists to feature work in show celebrating the healing power of art. 
If you are someone living with a chronic illness, rare disease, disability, or are the caretaker of someone with one of the above, this is a great opportunity to express yourself and share your artwork. Saratoga Springs-based nonprofit, Beyond My Battle, is holding an art show this May showcasing the ways art can help manage the many stressors of living with, or caring for someone living with, any kind of medical condition. The deadline to submit artwork is March 30. All art must be able to be hung on a wall and artists must be ages 14 and older. Mary Poppins Auditions
Malta Spotlighter’s Theatre Troupe announces auditions for a June 22-23 production of Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s “Mary Poppins,” a musical based on the stories of P.L. Travers and the Walt Disney film, presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International. Quilt Show
A spring quilt show with over 200 quilts, sponsored by Quilters United in Learning Together (Q.U.I.L.T.) in Delmar, will be held on Saturday, April 6 from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Sunday, April 7 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn, Troy.  The show is known for its spectacular quilts, and includes 13 vendors, raffles, demonstrations, and gift gallery.  There will be four Guild speakers, a display of suffrage blocks honoring Susan B. Anthony, and a popular Guild-sponsored mini-mart. Estherville Animal Shelter Spring Luncheon 
The luncheon will be held on Sunday, April 7 at Van Patten Golf Club in Clifton Park. Beautiful silent auction and raffle gifts. American Legion Auxiliary Unit 234 presents the Annual “Day with the Bunny” and Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, April 13 from 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. at 23 Pleasant St., Ballston Spa. Easter Egg Hunt Schedule: 11:15 a.m. toddlers to age 5, 11:45 a.m. ages 6 – 8 and Noon ages 9-12.

Tree Toga 9 
Tree Toga is a fun, family-friendly event at which Sustainable Saratoga’s great volunteers pull together to leave a green legacy for the next generation. Homeowners can request a free #NextGenTree by volunteering to be tree hosts and committing to water and nurture their tree during its first two vulnerable years. At this 9th Tree Toga planting day, Sustainable Saratoga will plant thirty young trees throughout Saratoga Springs. Volunteers will gather on April 27 at 9:30 a.m. at High Rock Park, Farmer’s Market Pavilion, across from 88 High Rock Ave., Saratoga Springs for registration, training, site assignments, and camaraderie. Spiritual Retreat for Grieving Parents
On April 27, St. Clement’s Church will offer a one-day Spiritual Retreat for Grieving Parents at 321 Lake Ave., Saratoga Springs from 9:30 a.m. – 7 p.m. The retreat is open to parents whose child of any age has died by any cause, no matter how long ago. All are welcome, regardless of situation or religion. Very few things in life are more painful than the death of one’s child. A parent’s life changes drastically and dramatically forever. Focusing on the spirituality of the grieving process and the very real promise of eternal life can help. This retreat is offered in cooperation with the Albany Diocese, and the Emmaus Ministry for Grieving Parents, a unique, ongoing Catholic program that has been serving the spiritual needs of grieving parents for almost 10 years. Beyond My Battle: Art with Heart & Hope
An art show celebrating the healing power of art for those living with chronic illnesses, disabilities, and caretakers. The exhibition will run from May 9 – 12 at Spring Street Gallery, located at 110 Spring Street in Saratoga Springs. On Thursday, May 9 from 6 – 9 p.m., many will come together at the gallery for an opening-night party featuring much more than artwork. Free Income Tax Assistance
Trained, IRS-certified volunteers are ready to help eligible families file their taxes for free through the beginning of April at Saratoga County EOC. EOC is a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program site. Volunteers are trained and IRS-certified to help provide free tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals, including people with disabilities, those who speak limited English or generally earn $54,000 or less. Last year, Saratoga County EOC helped over 200 families receive nearly $400,000 back in state and federal tax refunds. EOC is located at 39 Bath St., Ballston Spa. VITA hours are 9:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays, and 1 to 4 p.m. on Wednesdays. Appointments are required, call 518-288-3206. EOC is a nonprofit dedicated to alleviating poverty in Saratoga County. Its programs include the food pantry, soup kitchen, immigrant services, Head Start, Weatherization and WIC. Southern Saratoga Art Society Exhibits
Artists and members of SSAS are exhibiting throughout the area during March and April. Stop in and visit these exhibits and support art in southern Saratoga County. Glen Eddy, Niskayuna, 518-280-8361 will host local artist, Frank Coletta for the month of March. The Clifton Park Senior Community Center, located at 6 Clifton Common Blvd., Clifton Park, is hosting artist, Jean Skanes and selected paintings of her late father, James P. Jameson through the month of March. Jean is a watercolor artist who primarily paints landscapes and rustic scenes.  Her late father, James, was an accomplished artist with memberships in the prestigious Copley Society and the New England Watercolor Society.  He exhibited throughout the Northeast and was represented by multiple galleries winning numerous prizes and awards for both watercolor and oil paintings.  An exhibit not to be missed.

Volunteers needed for animal rescue group Hugs from Henry, a local animal rescue, which needs volunteers to foster dogs. AARP/TaxAide Services
The AARP TaxAide program will begin providing free tax preparation services for low- and moderate-income residents in Saratoga, Washington and Warren Counties.  The AARP/TaxAide program is sponsored by the AARP Foundation in cooperation with the Internal Revenue Service-IRS. AARP/TaxAide counselors are volunteers who are trained in state and federal tax regulations, and are certified by the IRS to provide tax preparation services. Tax preparation services will be available through April 15.  To find the location nearest you, go to www.aarp.org/findtaxhelp.  Then call the listed phone number to schedule an appointment.  If you do not have access to the internet, call 1-888-227-7669 for assistance.

Social Activities for Seniors
If you’re over 55, a long-time or new resident in the area and looking to meet active seniors, check out the Ballston Area Senior Citizens (BASC).  BASC sponsors many activities at the Milton Community Center located at 310 Northline Road, Ballston Spa.  Residents from surrounding communities are welcome to join.  Programs and activities include festive dinners, dances with live bands, “pickin’ sessions,” bus trips, weekly luncheons, exercise classes, chorus, crafts, etc.  Stop in any Thursday 11 a.m. and join us for lunch.  Yearly membership fee is $10.  Call Barb Broderson, Membership Secretary at 518-885-4229 for more information or visit www.ballstonareaseniors.com.
