MALTA – Malta Republicans are taking advantage of social media this election season to encourage voter participation in the town’s millennial generation.
Morgan Zegers, a 20-year-old Malta resident and 2018 candidate for New York State Assembly District 113, has partnered with this year’s local candidates on a plan to personally contact young voters on social media to get them to the polls on Nov. 7.
Regarding the effort, Zegers said, “As a younger candidate for public office, I take both roles of encouraging activism in my generation and supporting my town’s candidates in the weeks leading up to the election very serious. Voter efficacy is key in local elections.
“In the weeks leading up to Nov. 7,” she added, “I’ve had conversations with dozens of Malta’s millennial voters. I’ve reached out mostly via Facebook letting them know the difference their vote could make and, so far, I’ve gotten some exciting responses. I’m honored to help fellow Republicans get their message out to young voters.”
Ted Willette, chairman of the Malta Republican Committee, said: “I believe it is important for the younger voters of our community to be educated on the political stances of our local candidates. They are at an age where every dollar counts. They deserve to know how much is at stake when it comes to local tax dollars. It is important for them to understand the differences between the parties. Our party is focused on giving the younger members of our community a hand-up, not a hand-out, by ensuring they have the ability and the savings to take the next steps in their lives, like home ownership and career growth, head-on.”
“It is very important for all citizens to engage in the local governing process,” added Malta Supervisor Vincent DeLucia. “After all, that is the level where decisions generally have the greatest impact on what is most meaningful to the individual. It is that ‘grass roots’ level that is the basis for and expands to the broader state and federal policies. The opportunity to vote is not only a right but also a responsibility.
“The younger members of each community need to be more actively involved because of their fresh, creative views for decision making and because they stand to gain (or lose) the most from our great and free nation,” DeLucia continued. “Basically, the stakes are highest for them. Because of the prolonged internal assault against our basic tenets of democracy, our beliefs and customs, our constitution, our very culture, it is extremely important for young folks to study and fully understand our country's history, the U.S. Constitution, and the valuable reasons behind the guiding documents our forefathers blessed us with. They need to know the terribly painful lessons of history when tyranny shuts down free speech and why our nation's founders so adamantly fought to protect it.”
