400+ Jobs: Dollar General Eyeing Wilton

Public Encouraged to Bring Welcome Signs

WILTON - Dollar General is eyeing a parcel of land off of exit 16 of the Northway as a potential location for a $92.4 million distribution center it intends to build somewhere in the Northeast.

According to Dan MacDonald, a spokesman for the company based in Goodlettsville, Tennessee, they are currently evaluating multiple locations. Although Dollar General is interested in this site, the large retail chain has not yet committed to building a distribution center in Wilton at this time.

Wilton Town Supervisor Art Johnson confirmed Dollar General has an option on the land, and they are through the zoning board, but are still in the very preliminary stages of the planning board process.

“It’s very exciting, the thought of all those jobs and the addition to the tax base,” said Johnson. “A lot of the jobs are not automated, as some people might think. There’s a lot of manual labor involved and they need a lot of people. Salaries will likely average between $35,00-$45,000 a year, and there will be upper level management positions, too. This will give people who may not have a professional license or young people a chance to make a decent income. I look forward to working with them.”

MacDonald said the company has much to consider when exploring a location for the 934,000-square-foot distribution center, such as availability of workforce, the business climate, roads with easy access to an interstate system, and infrastructure.

“We’re still early in the site selection process,” said MacDonald. “We need a new distribution center to support our growth. We just opened one in Janesville, Wisconsin with over 500 jobs. We’ll have more than 400 jobs in this new project somewhere in the Northeast. We opened 730 stores this year, and plan on 900 new stores in 2016. We’ve had pretty successful growth over the last five years. We’re looking for a site that fits in our footprint for growth in the Northeast. It’s an exciting time.”

Johnson said they are also looking for $11.26 million in sales and property tax incentives from the Saratoga County Industrial Development Agency. There will be a public hearing on January 11 at 8 a.m. at the Wilton Town Hall regarding the requested tax incentives.

“They want a 10-year PILOT,” said Johnson, “a payment in lieu of taxes. The company is doing its due diligence. They know there’s no sewer, water, or gas on that side of the Northway; that all three utilities will have to be extended from the other side.”

Given the unknown competition from locations in other states, Johnson thinks the best thing the public can do to help bring these jobs here is to show up at the meetings in support of the project.

“This is a new-coming business that is not familiar with New York,” he said, “and the fact that a town is receptive to a project can make a world of difference. The planning board meetings are monthly as they move through the different phases of approval, and the public is always welcome.”

Dollar General currently has 12 operational distribution centers in Alabama, California, Florida, Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Virginia. Two distribution centers are currently under construction in Texas and Wisconsin.

WILTON – Last June, residents of Wilton and surrounding towns pulled together to raise funds for Clarkie Carroll, a 13-year-old lacrosse player who had been diagnosed in 2013 with Ewing’s Sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer that only affects 250 people a year.

Nearly 350 people gathered at McGregor Links Country Club in support of Clarkie and participated in “The Clarkie Cup,” raising nearly $40,000 as a community.

Due to those funds and other donations raised in honor of Clarkie, the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a volunteer-powered and donor-centered charity dedicated to raising money for childhood cancer research, announced this week that a Hero Fund created in honor of Clarkie Carroll will support lifesaving childhood cancer research, specifically a research grant focused on Ewing Sarcoma. About $300,000 was raised, and all of the funds are going toward research. This is the second $100,000 research grant to be awarded out of the funds raised by the Wilton community.

“It sounds cliché, but it definitely takes a village,” said Clarkie’s father, Dave Carroll. “An unfortunate circumstance led to some wonderfully generous folks and an amazing turnout at the fundraiser. We are immensely grateful – there’s so many people to thank. If it weren’t for them, we wouldn’t be where we are now.”

After struggling with leg pain throughout his 2013 spring lacrosse season, Clarkie’s parents pushed for an MRI. It showed a mass in his upper right femur. Clarkie’s treatment involved 34 weeks of chemotherapy and surgery to remove the top half of his femur and replace it with a titanium prosthesis and donor bone. Clarkie completed treatment in May 2014 and now shows no evidence of disease.

“We stay cautiously optimistic,” said Dave Carroll. “He’s doing well, he has a metal prosthesis in his leg and needs a couple adjustments from a hardware standpoint, but he’s tougher than most. His mindset is he doesn’t feel sorry for himself. He checks the box and keeps on grinding, setting goals for the day, the week, and just goes from there. I have learned a lot from him.”

Dave Carroll added that the disease is so rare and not well known that it is not a priority in national research funding.

“It will take getting the dollars to the folks in the research labs, and on the [micro] scopes, and in the basements of the hospitals to find a cure,” he said. “It’s going to have to come from private dollars. We are humbled by Wilton’s generosity, and hopeful all the hard work does pay off. It’s amazing, but not surprising, that a community like this rallied around one of its own. And now that money is getting to the right folks, those that have the most promising work.”

This year, the “Team Clarkie St. Baldrick’s Research Grant” was awarded to Dr. Eric Sweet-Cordero, Ph.D., at Stanford University. The $100,000 grant will support Dr. Sweet-Cordero’s research project that aims to understand how a DNA mutation causes Ewing Sarcoma. He hopes that understanding this mutation will lead to better therapies for children with this cancer.

The Team Clarkie Fund was started by Dave and Shannan Carroll in honor of their son, Clarkie. Throughout treatment, Clarkie amazed everybody with his strength, positivity, sense of humor and resilience.

The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a volunteer-powered charity committed to funding the most promising research to find cures for childhood cancers and give survivors long and healthy lives. Since 2005, St. Baldrick’s has awarded more than $176 million to support lifesaving research, making the Foundation the largest private funder of childhood cancer research grants. Restaurant’s Popular Cheesecake Hits the Airwaves

By Stephanie Hale-Lopez

Saratoga TODAY

WILTON – For the last three years, Nové Italian Restaurant in Wilton has been serving what the owners call, “Italian-American food done right.”

When Long Island resident Louis Lazzinnaro first visited Saratoga County he knew he hit a jackpot of a community.

“I’ve always been involved with horses and I thought Saratoga would be a great place to have a restaurant,” said Louis.

Louis said he wouldn’t call himself a restaurateur. He’s in the construction business, but knows almost everyone loves a hearty, Italian meal. So, in 1999 he opened Sergio’s – a family-style Italian restaurant. Fast forward to just over a decade later, Louis and his wife, Stefanie, thought it was time for a major upgrade.

“We changed the whole concept,” said Louis. “We stayed open later, made individual portions, added a pizza oven, we now offer take-out and deliveries, and we got a great response.”

That’s when Sergio’s turned into Nové.

“We changed it and gave it a facelift,” said Stefanie. “We really put our heart and soul into it. We wanted to make it more of a neighborhood-type of place.”

Situated at 707 Route 9, the Lazzinnaros said they wanted to name the new restaurant after its location. Nové means nine in Italian.

“You can go to Nové and you can get a nice, simple meal,” said Louis. “You can dine with your family, you can go there on a date, we have watch parties there and a bocce ball court in the back. It’s a local family place.”

With plenty of options for appetizers, salads, pizzas, pastas and main course dishes, Nové also has an extensive U.S. and international wine list. In fact, the restaurant recently received an Achievement of Excellence Award from Wine Spectator Magazine for “having one of the most outstanding restaurant lists in the world.”

Aside from the food and wine, one particular item on the menu has taken on a status of its own – Stefanie’s cheesecake. Inspired by a European recipe, Stefanie put her own twist on the classic dessert and offered it on the menu. She said she wasn’t expecting customers to love it as much as they do, but she’s happy to satisfy their sweet tooth.

“Most people say it’s the best cheesecake they’ve ever tasted,” said Stefanie. “But I’ll be honest, I don’t even eat cheesecake. I made it once for my husband and he goes, ‘You have to put it in the restaurant!’”

Stefanie’s cheesecake has gained such popularity in fact, she recently appeared on Bethenny Frankel’s syndicated daytime talk show, “Bethenny,” where she was asked to partner with Alan Rosen, owner of Junior’s Cheesecake in Brooklyn, to make her cheesecake available nationwide.

Stefanie and Alan will perfect the recipe and go on-air to sell it on QVC.

“We’ll be on QVC soon, we still have to work some things out,” said Stefanie. “I’m very excited, I can’t wait!”

The Lazzinnaros are certainly proud of the success Nové has had, but they’re looking forward to the future as well. They recently purchased property on Caroline Street in Saratoga Springs and are working on opening another restaurant.

Saratoga Health & Wellness Aims for Fall Opening

By Colette Linton

WILTON— Owners of Saratoga Health & Wellness announced their plans for the construction of a new facility, moving out of the present and into a new location, for which they plan to break ground ahead of summer.

The new facility will be located at 538 Maple Avenue, and is expected to be open in late fall of this year.

Owners and physiologists of Saratoga Health & Wellness Michael Lapolla and Nicholas Galuardi have been in the planning stages for the past year for an expansion project with the goal of owning property and having more control of their business destiny, they wrote in a press release.

The new facility is to offer the same experience that customers have come to expect from the four-and-a-half-year-old business such as a relaxed fitness environment, wellness and nutrition consulting services, professional and degreed staff members, and “plenty of room to move around,” Lapolla said.

New programs may become available along with the new facility as a result of client recommendations and requests. One such possibility would be to include more educational space and group instruction such as pilates, tai chi and yoga.

A mezzanine, a key feature in providing additional space in the gym and consulting area, will house office space.

In this way we free up more of that valuable square footage,” Lapolla said. “That's one of the things our customers like is that there's a lot of room to move around. It's more of a homey feel and we want to keep that kind of atmosphere.”

The planned facility will be about 23 percent larger than their current gym located at 30 Gick Road in Saratoga Springs, or 9,000 square feet. In addition, there will be 5,000 to 6,000 square feet of leasable tenant spaces.

Lapolla said that it's important to bring a health and wellness community to the facility by housing businesses in related fields in the tenant spaces in order to help create the desired atmosphere for a beneficial give and take between health care specialties.

I think that what we try to bring to the community is make the idea of improving your health more accessible to more people, and people generally come to our facility because they are looking for the noncompetitive atmosphere and it's what we try to offer,” he said.

Saratoga Health and Wellness will remain at its current location until its lease ends in October.

LaMarco Physical Therapy will be joining the Saratoga Health and Wellness center in their move to Wilton. LaMarco Physical Therapy has been working with the health center for about three years and plans to occupy a space on the first floor of the new facility.

It’s a great relationship, a great marriage between an injured and ageing population that continues to be more physically fit and more aware of being physically fit,” said James Markwica, owner and physical therapist at LaMarco Physical Therapy. “We’ll be helping to maintain their health so that they can continue to their (clients’) activities and gym membership.”

A Weekend of Wellness Awaits

WILTON- The Wellness Department at Healthy Living Market and Café at the Wilton Mall invites you to start 2014 with a focus on whole-body wellness.

“The key theme of the weekend is ‘connections’.” Said David Wolfe, the Market’s Saratoga Wellness Manager. “Hopefully, the weekends’ offerings will help to re-establish some primal relationships that have been lost in our fuel-abusing, modern society.”

“We have been governed by the psychology of ‘more’ instead of sustainability,” Wolfe said. “These seminars and programs are designed to restore our primal relationships with our food, our earth and with other human beings.”

“Since the 50s and 60s we have been sold on the philosophy of convenience, which has led to the toxification of our bodies,” Wolfe explained further. “The good news is that these things are correctable, yet only if we make a conscious effort. These programs will hopefully get people started thinking, or continuing along a good path.”

On Saturday and Sunday February 8 and 9 the Market’s Learning Center and Wellness Department will team up with some of Saratoga’s most skilled health professionals and local vendors with the focus on areas such as:

- Flu and cold prevention

- How to make a habit of healthy eating in 2014

- An understanding of the products the Market sells and their benefits

- 2 days of life-enriching Learning Center Classes

- Dr. Hauschka makeovers and kits

- In-house cooking demonstrations all weekend, with and emphasis on seasonal foods

- Free samples, recipes and giveaways

- A panel of local health professionals will be talking about their own health challenges, changes they’ve made in life style and diet, and they’ll answer your questions.

“The entire weekend culminates with a panel discussion on Sunday at 6:30 p.m.,” David Wolfe said. “This is where you can get the answers and recommendations from 10-12 of our professionals. Anyone can ask anyone about anything!”
