Adirondacon Tabletop Gaming Convention

Strides for CJD Awareness and Fundraising Walk

Veterans Memorial Park, Adams Rd. Geyser Rd., Saratoga Springs | 10 a.m. This is a serious topic but the Strides for CJD is a fun event, bringing together families and friends and anyone else. We have games, free refreshments, Saratoga Santa, Saratoga Springs Fire Dept with a firetruck for kids to have a tour of, and awesome raffles-over 40 this year, all donated by the community including a Mountain Bike, Historic Saratoga Track Horse framed prints, a Team signed NY Giants Football, night at the Holiday Inn, brewery and winery donations, and so much more. Malta Cultural Arts Festival 2024

Malta Community Center, One Bayberry Drive, Malta 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Performances and Workshops will be Indoors and Outdoors, celebrating the cultural diversity of Malta and surrounding communities! Basic Ham Radio

Galway Public Library, 2112 East St., Galway | Noon – 2 p.m. To introduce using a Ham Radio. On October 26 from 10 – 12 p.m., the exam to obtain a tech license will be administered. Elktoberfest

Manhattan Short Film Festival

Clifton Park Halfmoon Public Library, 475 Moe Rd., Clifton Park | 2 p.m. Ten short films will be shown, having been selected from 872 submissions from across the globe. This year’s finalists hail from nine countries including the U.S., U. K., Ukraine, Italy, France, and more. Attendees will cast their vote for Best Film and Beset Actor. Runtime for each screening is approximately 2 hours and 36 minutes and includes an intermission. The library will provide refreshments and everyone who attends will be entered into a raffle drawing for a door prize.

2024 Cars and Coffee: Trunk or Treat Edition

Adirondack Basement Systems, 80 Sheehan St., Mechanicville | 8 a.m. – Noon. Bringing community together, while raising funds and donations for the Capital Region Toys for Tots. Classic cars in the show will be decked out for Halloween, while participants hand out candy to spectators. Children are encouraged to dress up as their favorite character and come enjoy a morning of trick or treating! There will also be a large bounce house for extra fun! Car enthusiasts of all levels are welcome to show off their finest vehicles for a good cause; no registration or payment required to attend. Free event, however, donations for Toys for Tots are greatly appreciated.

History Caravan

Saratoga National Historical Park, Visitor Center, 648 Route 32, Stillwater | 9:30 a.m. Looking for a more in-depth, hands-on experience during your visit? Join a Park Volunteer for a caravan-style tour of the Battlefield! Tours will last 2.5-3 hours. Follow along in your own vehicle for as long as you like. May be cancelled in the event of inclement weather. If you would like to reserve your spot and be notified in case of the need to reschedule due to weather, contact sara_reservations@nps.gov.

Autumn Stroll: Wealth & Wellness: Franklin Square

Meet: Northwest Corner of Division Street and Railroad Place, Saratoga Springs | 10:30 a.m. Stroll leader Carrie Woerner, Assemblywoman and former Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation Executive Director will highlight historic Franklin Square, Saratoga’s oldest residential neighborhood. All Sunday morning tours last approximately 90 minutes and require walking and standing on varied terrain. Tours will be limited to thirty and tickets must be purchased in advance. The cost per tour is $15 for SSPF members and $20 for non-members. Farrell Goehring Organ Concert

Battle of Bemus Heights Walking Tour

Saratoga National Historical Park, The Tide Turns parking lot (stop 5), 648 Route 32, Stillwater | 1 p.m.  Join Park Ranger Eric Schnitzer as he gives a guided tour of the fields where the Battle of Bemus Heights – the second battle of Saratoga – was fought on October 7, 1777. The battle was one of the most decisive American victories of the Revolutionary War and put an end to the British scheme to capture Albany. Major new information has reshaped our understanding of Benedict Arnold’s role in the battle, and discussing his heroism in the fight will be a highlight of the tour. No sign-up required. Tour should last 1 hour.

Galway Preservation Society Meeting

Galway Town Hall, 5910 Sacandaga Road, Galway | Doors open at 6:45. This month’s program will be on the 115th NY Infantry of the Civil War with particular attention to local soldiers from Galway and the surrounding area. The presentation will be given by Scott Young. Our programs are always open the public, free of charge. If you choose, annual family or household memberships are available for $10 per year. Dehydrate Hiking Season Snacks

Brown Bag Lunch: A Heritage in Poetry & Song

Saratoga Veterans Chorus Rehearsal

American Legion Post 70, West Avenue, Saratoga Springs | 7 p.m. All veterans of the Nation’s armed forces, including current active, Reserve, and Guard service members, are cordially invited to learn more about the camaraderie of choral singing in a “no audition” informal setting. Marc Ribot: Charlie Chaplin’s “The Kid” (1921)

“Color of Sound” Saratoga Community Arts Concert

Saratoga Senior Center, 290 West Ave., Saratoga Springs | 2 – 3 p.m. Flutist Melanie Chirignan along with pianist Melinda Faylor and cellist Laura Melnicoff – Classically trained musicians who take elements of classical pieces and reimagine them into improvised compositions. They commissioned artist Mercedes Soriano to take a time-lapse video of them painting to one of the trio’s improvisations, which will be projected behind the performers while they play live to it, adding a captivating visual component. The 45-minute concert will be followed by a 10–15-minute question and answer portion. Free, open to the public.

Frederick Douglass Speaks on Democracy

Brookside Museum, 21 Fairground Ave., Ballston Spa | 2 p.m. The Saratoga County History Center and the Saratoga Springs Black Elks have joined together to cosponsor a timely presentation by Frederick Douglass interpreter Nathan M. Richardson. Mr. Richardson will lead a conversation about the meaning of American democracy from the perspective of the renowned former slave turned writer, orator and abolitionist. Hear how his relationship with other abolitionists and several Presidents influenced his beliefs which remain important today. History of Winslow’s Restaurant in Wilton, NY

Wilton Heritage Museum, 5 Parkhurst Rd, Wilton | 6 p.m. The Wilton Heritage Society will present Jeff Baker. Jeff ran Winslow’s Restaurant for many years after acquiring it from his grandparents, Tess and Harold Clute.  Many in Wilton still remember Tess and Harold and the wonderful turkey dinners they served.  Winslow’s has been a staple in Wilton and the turkey dinners are legendary.  Everyone is awaiting news on what’s next for Winslow’s.  Perhaps Jeff will solve that mystery for us.  Join us for a potluck dinner, followed by the presentation.

Patrice Malatestinic – Works on Paper Weekend Art Show

It is about a small community “on the mountain”, west of Corinth where Ruby was raised. The community has a rich history of families and friends’ connectedness that continues today. Her talk will explore that persistent, multi-generational web. Ruby has been a Town historian, a folklorist, and a volunteer at Brookside Museum in Ballston Spa. A Call to Spy Panel Discussion

September Meeting and Annual Covered Dish Dinner

Town of Greenfield Community Center, 25 Wilton Rd., Greenfield Center | 6 p.m. The dinner will be followed by a meeting at 7 p.m. The program will be Visher Ferry – A Forgotten Crossroads presented by Dave Waite. This was produced by Saratoga County History Center, directed by Jim Richmond and edited by Dave Waite. The film traces this unique community from its first settlement to the present through interviews with local residents telling the story of this historic hamlet which grew alongside the Erie Canal but remains vibrant to this day. 22nd Duathlon Mohawk Towpath Byway

7th Annual Dan Provost Memorial Walk for Awareness and Recovery

Registration, fun and games begin at 9 a.m. with a 1.25-mile family-friendly walk at approx. 10 a.m.  Refreshments, free Narcan training, addiction recovery resources and program information and numerous raffle items will be available. The Walk is in memory of Saratoga resident Dan Provost, who passed away in 2014 at age 23 as a result of a drug overdose after struggling for several years with substance use disorder. The purpose of the Walk is to remember lives taken too soon, to raise awareness of addictions, to educate the community about recovery services and celebrate those living in recovery.  Suggested individual donation is $10, family donation $20. Meets at the Washington Bathhouse (National Museum of Dance), 99 S. Broadway, Saratoga Springs | 10:30 a.m. Join Linda Harvey for a stroll through Lincoln Park in Saratoga Spa State Park, a National Historic Landmark. Discover the park’s history from its early carbonic acid plants to the creation of the State Reservation in 1909 and the construction of the Lincoln and Washington Bathhouses in the 1920s. This tour is in partnership with the Friends of Saratoga Spa State Park, a non-profit organization that supports and enhances the park’s historic, natural, and recreational resources. Autumn Sunday Stroll: Down in the Valley: Exploring the Gut

Meet: the northwest corner of Putnam and Spring Streets at the Hathorn Spring | 10:30 a.m. 

Alexandra explores the area behind Broadway known as “The Gut,” which was home to many working-class and Jewish families who provided important contributions to the community. All Sunday morning tours last approximately 90 minutes and require walking and standing on varied terrain. Tours will be limited to thirty and tickets must be purchased in advance.  The cost per tour is $15 for SSPF members and $20 for non-members. Honoring Veterans of the Revolutionary War

Three Sisters Festival

Saratoga County History Center/Brookside Museum, 21 Fairground Ave., Ballston Spa | 1 – 4 p.m. Discover the Three Sisters: Corn, Beans and Squash. This is a drop-in event for the whole family, (bring chairs and blankets, and linger for a while). The celebration will feature story telling by Joe Bruchac, well-known local author and the current Poet Laureate of Saratoga Springs, who will also share tales of local Indigenous culture. An exhibit on Indigenous artifacts will be open for viewing. There will also be talks on native plants as well as garden tours and a bake sale. In addition, Balet Flowers and Design will have plants and bouquets for sale, with a percentage of the sales being donated to the History Center.

This event is rain or shine (it will be moved indoors), free to attend, but donations are always gratefully received and will be used for SCHC programs and further development of the gardens.

The God of Isaac

Saratoga Horse Farm Tours

Various Farms in Saratoga County, Noon – 4 p.m.  Saratoga County Cornell Cooperative Extension is partnering with horse farms in Saratoga County for the annual Horse Farm Tour. This is a free opportunity for the public to visit and learn about the horse industry in the county. The farms are located from Schuylerville to Galway. The participating farms include Mill Creek Farm, Alliance 180, Saratoga Glen Farm, Therapeutic Horses of Saratoga, McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds, and Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital. 2024 Village Walking Tour – Village of Stillwater

Meet: Stillwater Library parking lot adjacent to Blockhouse Park, Rt 4 Hudson Ave. Stillwater | 10 – 11:30 a.m. Led by Sara Kipp, director of the Stillwater Public Library. The tour will begin at the the former location of many mills and factories in the late 1800s. Other stops along the way will include the 150-year-old St. John’s Episcopal Church; the site of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camp; the Newland-Wood firehouse and many more. After a one-mile walk, the tour will end in the new library with many historical images and maps of the Champlain Canal which is celebrating its 200th anniversary.

Wilton New York: Goodbye Old 1910

Brookside Museum, 21 Fairground Ave., Ballston Spa | 7 p.m.  Hamilton Craig, a doctoral student at CUNY researching farmers movement in the United States, and a native of Shushan, Washington County, will present a vivid portrayal of farm life in Wilton, New York based on the 1910 diary of Wilton resident Mary Brainard. The diary reveals an intimate picture of a rural world in transition, caught between the subsistence and barter economy of early America and the capitalist economy of modern America. Analyzing this diary offers an opportunity to reflect on what was gained in this transition and what was lost.

4th Annual Lemonade Stand Event

On Saturday, August 3, from 10:30 a.m. – 2 p.m., the Ballston Spa Sunshine Kid’s Lemonade Stand returns at Ribbon Café, located at 11 Prospect St., Ballston Spa, rallying support for 9-year-old Charles Barton, who is courageously battling leukemia. The event promises a day filled with activities for all ages, including children’s activities organized by local organizations such as Ballston Area Community Center, Saratoga Children’s Museum, and Ballston Area Recreation Center. Visitors can enjoy music, vendor booths, and special appearances including visits from Ballston Spa’s EMS, miniature donkeys from Maple Leaf Farm, dancers from Carol Lawrence Dance Center, a DJ, stock cars, and a firetruck from Ballston Spa Fire station.

Ladies Lesson, Lunch & Golf Tee Party

Brookhaven Golf course, 333 Alpine Meadows Rd., Greenfield | Noon – 3 p.m. The event is for golfers of all skill levels but requires no experience. Ladies are invited to join for one-hour group lesson at the driving range, where participants will be grouped by skill level and work with a golf professional. After the lesson, the ladies gather for lunch at The View Restaurant. One beverage of choice and lunch are included with registration, which costs $60 for residents and $70 for nonresidents. Guided Trolley Tours

Saratoga Heritage Area Visitor Center, 297 Broadway, Saratoga Springs | 10 a.m. This informative and entertaining 90-minute guided tour includes historic sights and points of interest along Broadway, North Broadway, Skidmore, the High Rock area, Saratoga Race Course, Union Avenue, and more! Upstate Transit has captured the charm of yesteryear and the comfort of today by designing trolleys with an authentic wooden interior, decorative etched glass windows, and air-conditioning. Trolleys also feature a wheelchair lift. Tours take place Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10 a.m. through August 31. Tickets are $25 per person. Recommended for children 12 and over. Day-of tickets can be purchased at the Visitor Center.

History of Beekeeping in the USA

Wilton Heritage Society, 5 Parkhurst Rd., Wilton | 6 p.m. Gregory Stoddard will present a program highlighting the contribution of women in establishing beekeeping in the colonies.  Prior to his timely presentation, sample his Honey Surprise as an hors d’oeuvre for the hot dog and sides potluck supper.  Please join us to learn more about our pollinators who are so important to our food supply.
